Though the California Rodeo Salinas is known for Big Week and all the activities that take place in July, there are over 70 committees who work year round to enhance our community in many ways. Our Relay for Life committee works tirelessly to raise funds to find a cure for cancer, gathering a spirited team to walk through the night May 17th while honoring those who are fighting and those who have lost their battles with cancer.
The California Rodeo Salinas has been participating in Relay for Life since 2004. The team was started by the late Lee Brooks who was the Director of Parking for many years for the California Rodeo Association. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2004 and fought long and hard until his passing in March of 2007. From 2004 to 2018, the California Rodeo's Relay for Life Team has raised over $60,000 for the American Cancer Society. The Rodeo Association encourages all rodeo committee members, families, friends and fans to join in the fight. Lupe Covarrubias-Martinez is the California Rodeo’s new Team Captain for 2019 and she says, "Cancer doesn't sleep and neither do we. So many of our families and friends have been affected by cancer. That is why we need heroes. Anyone who has made a donation, or taken a meal, stopped by to say hello, or just sat and held the hand of someone affected by this terrible disease is a hero. That is why the California Rodeo Salinas team is so proud to have so many heroes on our team raising funds, and along with so many other teams, having fun participating at Relay for Life."

The California Rodeo Association is a not-for-profit organization that strives to preserve and promote the traditions of the California Rodeo Salinas and the West. Through donation of our facility, vending and fundraising opportunities during Rodeo and other events, the California Rodeo Association returns over $400,000 annually to local non-profits.
