More than 35 years ago, California Rodeo Salinas Director Pete Pedrazzi attended a rodeo that left a lasting impression—and he knew it was something special that belonged in Salinas. That inspiration led to the creation of what is now known as the Special Buckaroos Rodeo, a one-of-a-kind experience designed to give children with special needs the chance to be cowboys and cowgirls for a day.
Held each year at noon on Rodeo Saturday, this cherished tradition welcomes local children from Monterey County into the arena for an unforgettable experience. Paired with professional cowboys and cowgirls, participants take part in adapted rodeo activities like roping a dummy steer, stick horse barrel racing, and even “riding” a bucking horse or bull made of soft materials. For many, the highlight is riding a real horse alongside their cowboy or cowgirl hero.
Dressed in hats, bandanas, and official contestant numbers, each child enjoys their moment in the spotlight—and leaves with a souvenir photo, a trophy, a contestant bag, and a big, proud smile.
