Over 35 years ago, California Rodeo Salinas Director Pete Pedrazzi attended a rodeo event that left a lasting impression—and he knew he had to bring it home to Salinas. That inspiration became the Exceptional Rodeo, an experience designed to give children with special needs the chance to be cowboys and cowgirls for a day.
Now known locally as the Special Buckaroos Rodeo, this beloved tradition takes place at noon on Rodeo Saturday each year. Local children from Monterey County are paired with professional cowboys and cowgirls to participate in adapted rodeo events—roping a dummy steer, stick horse barrel racing, and even “riding” a bucking horse or bull made of fur and stuffing. The highlight for many is riding a real horse with their cowboy or cowgirl hero by their side.
Dressed in hats, bandanas, and official contestant numbers, each child leaves with a souvenir photo, a trophy, a contestant bag—and a beaming smile. Thanks to the support of our rodeo announcers, volunteers, and generous sponsor Tanimura & Antle, the Special Buckaroos Rodeo continues to create unforgettable memories and lasting joy for participants and families alike.
