Statement Regarding 8-1-26 Incident at the Salinas Sports Complex

08/03/2026

The California Rodeo Association is deeply disturbed by the videos and reports circulating from the August 1 event held at the Salinas Sports Complex. We understand and share the concern expressed by many members of our community regarding the apparent treatment of an animal.

Our thoughts are with the rider who was injured during the event, along with his family, friends, and all those impacted. We are closely following developments and remain hopeful for the best possible outcome.

While this event was produced and operated by an independent outside promoter renting the Salinas Sports Complex, and was not a California Rodeo Association event, we recognize that the incident occurred at a facility we manage and that many people associate with our organization. We take that responsibility seriously.

The California Rodeo Association does not condone animal abuse or the mistreatment of livestock under any circumstances. The actions depicted in the videos are inconsistent with our values and with the standards we expect of anyone using our facilities.

The event producer violated requirements outlined in its facility rental agreement. As a result, this organization will not be permitted to rent the Salinas Sports Complex for future events.

We welcome a review and are fully prepared to cooperate with any law enforcement or regulatory authorities as they investigate this matter and will provide any information requested as part of their investigation.

For more than a century, the California Rodeo Association has been committed to the responsible care and humane treatment of animals. We appreciate the community members who brought these concerns forward and remain committed to ensuring our facilities are used in a manner that reflects our longstanding standards and values.

Special thanks to our All Around Grand Champion Sponsors
