WHAT’S NEW WITH THE CALIFORNIA RODEO SALINAS THIS YEAR?

MORE THAN JUST THE DATE HAS CHANGED
09/20/2021
The California Rodeo Salinas is traditionally held during the third week in July. After postponing the 2021 dates to September due to concerns with COVID-19, the Association was chosen to host the ProRodeo Tour Finale for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. This means that Salinas is the final stop on the circuit for the cowboys and cowgirls competing to earn a spot at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in December. They are competing for almost $1 million in prize money-the largest purse in Salinas’ history. The top contestants in each event qualify to compete in Salinas in all the traditional events and new this year, the Women’s Breakaway Roping competition that will take place in the arena for the first time ever.

There will be fewer total contestants, but the show will look mostly the same to fans for the first three Rodeo performances September 23rd, 24th and 25th. Championship Sunday on September 26th will be more exciting than ever, as the top 8 contestants from the previous 3 days of competition compete in a shootout round. From there the top 4 contestants will come back with a clean slate to try and edge out the competition with the fastest time or highest score and become the overall champion taking home the prize money, championship buckles and trophy saddle.

The Women’s Breakaway Roping is a new event to the California Rodeo Salinas this year and will be included in each performance of the rodeo in the arena. It’s fast, it’s exciting, and it’s a big deal for women ropers to be able to compete and show their skills on the ProRodeo stage. The rules of breakaway roping are like any roping event, the calf will be given a head start which is determined by the size of the arena. Once the barrier is released, the cowgirl must throw a loop around the calf’s neck and stop her horse immediately. Her rope is tied to the saddle horn with a breakaway string. When the running calf reaches the end of the rope, the rope is pulled tight and the string breaks. The breaking of the string marks the end of the run. The fastest time wins, with some times as fast as 2 seconds depending on arena size, box depth and score length.

In addition to the excitement of the Tour Finale, a new track event this year is the 1st annual Debbie Pedrazzi Memorial Cutting event on Thursday night. This is held in memory of Rodeo President Dave Pedrazzi’s late wife. The Cutting event showcases the athleticism and agility of our equine partners, by sorting a cow from the herd and keeping it from returning until the rider feels they have shown the skill level and natural talent of their horse. Each contestant has 2 minutes and 30 seconds to show their cattle handling skills to the judge(s).

The Track will also feature The Riata Ranch Cowboy Girl Trick Riders along with Rodeo Entertainer Matt Merritt daily. Chuck Wagons will race in the arena and the entire show (all four performances) will be aired live on The Cowboy Channel each day and streamed on The Cowboy Channel + app.
