Kiddie Kapers Parade

Date: July 17, 2022
Time: 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

The 2022 Kiddie Kapers Parade will take place on SUNDAY, July 17th at 3pm

The theme is 'Bull-ieve in Yourself.'

We encourage kids to dress up as whatever they'd like to be (astronauts, cowboys, doctors, professional sports players or even bullfighters-anything!) and to always believe in themselves. There will be special prizes for the best dressed bullfighters this year.

Ross Hill, a long-time freestyle bullfighter and 3-time Salinas champion, passed away in 2021, but he mastered taking a selfie with a fighting bull and always said 'believe in your selfie.' We wanted to honor him and bring that spirit to the 2022 Kiddie Kapers Parade theme. Ross is featured on the 2022 commemorative California Rodeo Salinas poster and we know lots of kids looked up to him so the Kiddie Kapers Parade will be a tribute to him.

The Grand Marshal is Pat DuVal, the Singing Sheriff.

The children in the parade are grouped into 8 divisions for judging. The divisions are Playground Floats, Cowboys and Cowgirls, Strollers & Wagons, Community Groups, Costumed Kids & Pets, Dance & Drill Teams, Group Floats and Rolling Riders (skates, rollerblades, scooters, skateboards, bikes and trikes-helmets required). Everyone is encouraged to wear western clothing.

Thousands of people line the streets of the Salinas City Center to watch over 1,200 children ride on floats, bikes, in wagons and more as a kick off to Big Week and the California Rodeo Salinas.

Judging for Kiddie Kapers Parade is done by Parade volunteers and there is a first - third place awarded in each category. At the Parade’s announcing stand, the division winners are recognized. The 1st place winner in each Division receives a cash prize. There are two 1st place winners in the Cowboys & Cowgirls Division, one boy and one girl. These two winners get to ride at the front of the Parade in special cars. All other division winners walk at the front of their division behind a huge banner. 1st place winners in each division receive a handsome award ribbon. Each entrant gets a commemorative ribbon, a crisp $1 bill and coupons from local merchants.

Please call the Rodeo office at 831-775-3100 for information. There are also answers to some frequently asked questions to the right.

Grand Marshal - Pat DuVal, the Singing Sheriff

Pat DuVal was born in Fort Pierce, Florida, after joining the Army and serving at Ft. Ord, he decided to stay in California. He became the first black deputy in Monterey County and it was while living in The Golden State that Pat followed his dream of singing, everything from opera to country to rock-'n-roll. Pat quickly became known as the “Singing Sheriff” which is now a household Rodayo name. Pat is an irreplaceable part of the California Rodeo. His rendition of “I love you California” performed during the grand entry can be heard before each rodeo performance and has been for decades. We have always considered Pat a part of the Rodeo family and he is an Honorary Director of the California Rodeo Salinas. We salute Pat, our Grand Marshal of the Kiddie Kapers Parade.
