Dreaming Big!

WOW! I still can’t believe that I won the title of Miss California Rodeo Salinas. This is such a great honor and I am truly thrilled to have the chance to represent this great rodeo. First, I have to thank everyone who makes the California Rodeo Salinas happen every year: volunteers, committee members, and sponsors. This year’s Miss California Rodeo Salinas sponsors have really made me feel like a queen with all the beautiful donations. The rodeo went by so fast, however; it is one weekend that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Every aspect of the rodeo this year was so much fun, even the early morning interviews. I learned so much in a short period of time that will benefit me for the rest of my life. My first post rodeo activity was the California State Horseman’s Association Region 6 royalty competition where I helped with the horsemanship phase. Then I attended the Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards Dinner with some of the California Rodeo committee members. As I am writing this article I am packing for the Pendleton Round Up in Oregon where I will be participating in their Westward Ho Parade and other events. I look forward to all my travels this year as Miss California Rodeo Salinas.

I have always dreamed about being a rodeo queen. I remember as a little girl always following my sister, who was Miss San Benito 1995 and Miss Grand National 1997, around like a little puppy dog. I wanted to be like her and now I have the chance to do as my sister did and encourage little girls to follow their dreams. Every little child needs to have dreams that they can aim for; they say "dream big, and who knows maybe it will come true". Growing up I was actually told once that because of a speech impairment that I had growing-up, I would never be able to be a rodeo queen. I think I have successfully disproved that speech teacher because I now represent the largest rodeo in California. Anyone can achieve anything if they want it badly enough. I learned to work with the speech impairment and not against it; there may still be words I can not pronounce as well as I would like to, so I just do not use them. I guess what I am trying to say is that no matter what others may say, if you want something . . . make it happen! Some things will be hard to accomplish but that does not mean it can’t happen. Often it is the things one has to work hardest for that are truly rewarding and remembered.

I plan to travel a lot this year and with the help of The Horseman’s News tell of my travels, the people I meet and the places I visit. For those of you already planning your calendars for next year remember the California Rodeo Salinas is July 17-20, 2008 and for more information on the California Rodeo Salinas please visit www.carodeo.com.

Until next time,
Amanda Jacobsen,
