Rodeo Debuts Lenticular Poster
Oct 16, 2009

SALINAS, CA - October 16, 2009-The newly elected President of the California Rodeo Salinas, Craig Andrus, had a difficult time deciding which image to use in his inaugural poster which will commemorate the Centennial Celebration of the California Rodeo. Having been on the Arena Committee of the Association since the mid-'80s, Craig was torn between an image of the bucking chutes from that time and an image of the new chutes that exist in the arena today. While contemplating his decision, he attended a baseball game and saw a baseball card with a sort of holographic image that seemed to be animated when he turned the card in his hand. That gave him the creative idea to do the same thing with the Rodeo's poster.

The 2010 commemorative poster features photos of the old chutes, new chutes and bucking horses that move by using lenticular technology. Everyone can remember the little prizes in the Cracker Jack boxes that 'winked' and seemed animated as you moved them. That is an example of a lenticular image, which is created in a multi-step process of layering images on lenses. The effect is eye-catching and a first for the California Rodeo Salinas, which usually commissions an artist to paint or draw images for the posters. Using four photographs and a graphic designer who prepared the files for lenticular printing, Craig's vision was brought to life. When the poster was debuted at the annual Stockholder's meeting on October 15th and Miss California Rodeo Salinas 2009 picked it up to show the crowd and turned it to show the imagery changing from chute to chute, the crowd gasped.  Attendees at the Stockholder's meeting said this lenticular poster could become a collector's item and is a unique way to capture some of the tradition of the Rodeo as part of the Centennial Celebration.

The California Rodeo would like to thank the Homer & Nancy Hayward Foundation for their generosity in underwriting the poster. The sign for the 'Homer and Nancy Hayward Timers Stand" can be seen in the poster in the image of the new chutes.

Posters are available for purchase for $20.00 in the California Rodeo Salinas office between 9am and 5pm, Monday through Friday, at 1034 N. Main Street in Salinas. Posters will be available for purchase on the website on Tuesday October 20th for $20.00 plus shipping.
